Three components support the Ashtanga Yoga practice: Breath, Core & Gaze. Practice is the art of engaging these three together in a continuous unbroken flow. This foundation produces a deeper practice & greater understanding within the postures.

In this class we will learn step-by-step how to engage these fundamentals - Breath, Core (bandha) & Gaze (drishti) - within the Ashtanga sequence to develop a more mindful & effective experience, and to ensure noticeable improvements in our practice. This foundation is universal and provides the basis for joy & grace to blossom both on & off the mat.

Friday, 6 - 8pm, Led Primary Series with Chanting & Pranayama: $40
Asana practice opens the body & mind to greater depths of harmony (shanti) naturally instilling focus. Further extending our good work in the Primary Series, this class will culminate with Pranayama and the chanting of Shanti Mantras to provide us with a calm satisfying experience of yoga appropriate to the ending of the day.

Saturday, 12 - 3pm, Setting the Foundation - Breathing, Bandhas & the Niyamas: $60
Ashtanga Yoga is the art of engaging each breath with bandhas to stabilize attention in the postures and to awaken understanding, insight & self reflection. In this class we will learn how to use the fundamentals - Breath, Bandha & Drishti - within each vinyasa to develop mindfulness and concentration. We can then experience the art of sustained attention and explore the intimate connection this plays in developing the Niyamas which form the foundation for a more joyful, graceful & effective yoga practice.

Sunday, 12 - 3pm, Ascending the Mountain: Backbends from Primary into Intermediate: $60
From the foundation developed by Primary Series, the mountain of yoga can be ascended with greater ease and skill. Working from Breath, Bandha & Drishti, this class will progress through a portion of First Series while teaching us to prepare for an experiential examination of the deeper backbends of Second Series as well as the dropping back and standing up of the Ashtanga Yoga closing backbend sequence. From this we will explore where and how to further direct our attention inwards to the higher summits of pranayama and pratyahara which frees the mind from outer distractions making us fit for concentration and meditation.

Obstacles & Remedies in Yoga + Ashtanga Yoga Inside Out

January 17, 2015

$100

Native Yoga Center, Juno Beach FL

Ashtanga Yoga: Obstacles & Remedies, Saturday (1/17), 12:00 - 3:00pm ($60):
Led Primary Series with Yoga Sūtras Chanting & Philosophy

Challenges are inherent in life & yoga, however these naturally occurring challenges may or may not affect the equanimity of our yogic journey. We will recite - call & response - the Pātañjala Yoga Sūtras and then discuss obstacles, an imbalanced mind, and the simple wisdom for cultivating equanimity as practiced in Ashtanga Yoga & as taught in the Sūtras.

“Bhāvana [frame of the mind] is most important. If your mind is not [focused], that is because bhāvana is not correct. But if bhāvana is correct, then it is possible for āsana to be correct, and [sustained attention] (citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ) then becomes possible.” - Sri K. Pattabhi Jois

Ashtanga Yoga Inside Out, Sunday (1/18), 12:00am - 3:00pm ($60):

The breathing & movement system - called vinyāsa - taught in Ashtanga Yoga systematically develops our awareness from the outside-in, from the external to the internal, from the gross to the subtle. The fundamentals are simple & profound: steadiness of breath & gaze (dṛṣṭi) while moving through the āsanas & vinyāsas - called tristhāna. Like musicians who practice & develop the music so that the flow can be achieved & expressed spontaneously, we will examine the subtitles of breathing, gazing, āsanas & vinyāsas & access - from inside-out - a rhythm of lightness, precision, depth & inner satisfaction.

Beginning with a practice & discussion of prāṇāyāma, bandhas & dṛṣṭi (gaze), we will then proceed with the Ashtanga Primary Series taught at a pace allowing for indepth instruction: How breath initiates bandhas & guides alignment, and How jump-backs & jump-throughs can flow into a continuous rhythm, These essentials lead us into creating an uninterrupted flow (nairantarya) and the formation of a firmly established foundation (dṛḍha bhūmi) & experience of yoga. We will also explore ways of engaging key āsanas - so they are “correct” - regardless of whether we are flexible or stiff, strong or weak.

Arogyam Bhaskaraath Ichheet ~ For Health We Must Worship the Sun!

Please join us for this very special event:
Vidwan Shrikantha Shastri conducts Ratha Saptami Pūjā and Aruna Prashna Chanting.
Yogī David Miliotis leads Sūrya Namaskāras performed in unison with Aruna Prashna Chanting.

All are welcome to participate in some or all of the 133 Sūrya Namaskāras and/or to simply listen & observe.

Vidwan Sri K. Pattabhi Jois taught that each step of Sūrya Namaskāra can be done with each phrase of the Aruna Prashna, and then each Sūrya Namaskāra will conform precisely with each Anuvaka (verse) as the Aruna Prashna is recited. “The Sūrya Namaskāra form the foundation for the entire method [of yoga] - and, as we all know, if one’s foundation is firm, then whatever is supported by it will be stable as well. So, if the Sūrya Namaskāra are first learned properly and their inner meaning grasped, then all the various āsanas, prāṇāyāmas, and the like that follow them will be useful and beneficial in their outcomes.” ~ Vidwan Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, 1916 - 2009
